CAVES: Caves are special geological formations shaped through the interaction of carbonate rocks and water over time. In addition to the beauty of their decoration, caves are also particularly fragile ecosystems since there is a whole world of larger (bats) and microscopic life forms (spiders, isopods, pseudoscorpions, etc.), many of which are perfectly adapted to the unique environment of their cave and nowhere else! There are also many caves of our Geopark with archaeological/cultural value, highlighting the role that these geoformations played in the long history of the man of Psiloritis! For all the above reasons, the caves and their fauna are protected by Legislation at the National and European level. However, apart from the responsibility of preserving the natural wealth of a cave when entering it, we also have the responsibility of our safety since, without special equipment or knowledge of speleology, caves that are not open for visitors can easily become dangerous. ATTENTION:

  • we do not destroy or remove anything from the cave, we do not pollute!
  • we show the necessary respect to the permanent inhabitants of the cave without causing any disturbance with noise, movement and our lights!
  • we follow the safety rules so as not to put ourselves at risk, we are informed and trained properly by speleological associations-clubs!
Caves we can visit at Psiloritis Geopark, which visitors can access easily and safely, are Ideon Andron in Nida (Anogia), Sfendoni Cave in Zoniana and Gerontospilios in Melidoni (Mylopotamos).
