UNESCO Global Geoparks Program

In November 2015, the UNESCO General Assembly unanimously recognized Global Geoparks as the Organization's Third Area Recognition Program (after World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves) through the International Geoscience and Geoparks Program. All the then European and World Geoparks were included in the program and were recognized as a UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp).
In order for a region to be recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, it must now include sites of geological interest of international value, a fact documented by the International Union of Geosciences (IUGS), to have a strong and effective management body, to have significant visibility, to operate fully as a geopark, as well as to cooperate and network with relevant bodies, organizations and other geoparks.
The basic rules of operation and features are determined through UNESCO decisions and relevant texts that are available through the organization's website.
